Anytime the idea of going to the movies is brought up, someone mopes and gripes about the skyrocketing movie ticket prices and the absurd concession stand prices. To tell you the truth, we mope and gripe along with them. It feels as though the once cheap and fun pastime of going to the movies is now a costly investment. What happened to movies being more about audience enjoyment than corporation cash crops?
Well, do not worry – not all movie theaters have morphed into money-making machines. The Triangle is filled with locally-owned theaters that are affordable, but also the money you pay to these theaters goes into supporting your local community.
The Rialto Theaters are a chain of theaters in Raleigh that screen a variety of films from Hollywood movies, to specializing in independent, foreign, and alternative films. Rialto Theaters include Mission Valley Cinemas, Six Forks Station Cinemas, The Colony Theater, and the famous Rialto Theater.
Though these theaters help to keep your wallet a little fuller, this does not mean the quality is less. All of the Rialto theaters are fully equipped with the top-of-the-line film projectors and the highest quality sound system. Also, because tickets and concessions cost less than they do at most other theaters, you are able to eat and drink while watching your film. Some of the theaters even offer adult beverages!
If you are looking to view a Hollywood film, then show times and tickets at Mission Valley Cinemas or Six Forks Station Cinemas are where you need to be. If you are more geared towards alternative, independent, and foreign films, then the Colony Theater and the Rialto Theater are better suited for that viewing.
All of the Rialto Theaters are renovated and restored vintage spaces. The theater spaces were given modern improvements while still maintaining the charm of the vintage space. The Rialto Theaters are also known for having famously good popcorn—it was once even chosen as the Independent Weekly’s Best in the Triangle.
Upcoming and ongoing events at Rialto Theaters include Cool Classics at the Colony, Cinema Overdrive, and the new Cinema inc. films. Cool Classics at the Colony is an event where cult classics, classics, and many more play at the Colony Theater for $5. Cool Classics such as The Goonies and The Big Lebowski play on the third Wednesday of every month.
